The three main types of POS printers
There are three main types of POS printers available in the market. These are thermal printers, dot-matrix or impact printers, and inkjet printers. All three printers have their advantages and disadvantages that you need to be aware of before purchasing.
The advantage of using thermal printers is their high speed and their ability to automatically cut the paper. The print is added to the paper through a digital printing process, where the thermal paper is heated when it passes over the thermal print head. This process reduces the noise from the printer as well. This type of printer has an improved print quality and prints receipts on both sides.
One of the disadvantages of using thermal printers is that they are more expensive than some of the other types of printers available in the market.
Dot-Matrix Printers / Impact Printers
The advantage of using dot-matrix printers is that they are the least expensive option. Besides, they are highly reliable and require minimal operating costs. Dot-matrix printers can also work in a high temperature environment like a kitchen, which makes it very popular among restaurant businesses.
One of the disadvantages of dot-matrix printers is that they are relatively loud as compared to other printers.
The advantage of inkjet printers is their relatively low cost. Also, most of them can combine both black and white, and color printing at the same time. Besides, an inkjet printer is a lot faster than a dot-matrix printer.
The disadvantage of inkjet printers is the cost of the cartridge. The ink cartridge must be replenished relatively more frequently. If the inkjet printer has not been used for a while, there is a chance that the cartridge will dry. When using the color printing option, the printer can be slow.
Factors to consider before purchasing a POS printer
- Interface: How will your POS printer connect with your POS terminal? The three types of interfaces are RS-232 Serial, Parallel, and USB. Decide which type of interface you will use, and check how many ports are available on your POS terminal. Also consider if any other peripherals need to be connected through the existing ports.
- POS software: Is the POS printer compatible with your POS software? Most printers are, but it's best to check with the software vendor before purchasing.
- Cash drawer: Do you plan to connect a POS printer to your existing cash drawer? If so, you will need to make sure that the POS printer is compatible with the cash drawer.
Remember to use our product guide to ensure that your printer is compatible with your existing device.
